Travel Vaccinations and advice

If you’re planning to travel outside the UK, you may need to be vaccinated against some of the serious diseases found in other parts of the world. 

In the UK, the childhood vaccination programme protects you against a number of diseases, but doesn’t cover most of the infectious diseases found overseas. 

The practice is able to provide immunisation or booster of UK vaccinations if necessary. The following travel vaccinations are usually available free on the NHS:

 1 Diphtheria, polio and tetanus (combined booster)

 2 Typhoid

 3 Hepatitis A

 4 Cholera 

A specialist centre MUST provide written documentation of any NHS vaccines require.

A specialist centre is able to provide further travel advice, immunisations and malaria prophylaxis if required for your intended destination. Please remember to inform the service you attend of all stop over points on the way. You should try to contact your chosen service preferably 8 weeks prior to travel. The service may be able to manage shorter time scales, but this is dependent on the immunisation schedule required.

  • On request, the practice is happy to provide a list of your current medications provided by the practice, known allergies and previous immunisations recorded on the practice system. Please allow 48 hours for this information to be provided.

Private Travel Vaccinations

You’re likely to have to pay for malaria prophylaxis and travel vaccinations against:

  1. Hepatitis B (first course three injections) when not combined with hepatitis A
  2. Japanese encephalitis and tick-borne encephalitis
  3. Meningitis ACWY and other meningitis vaccines
  4. Rabies (first course three injections)
  5. Tuberculosis (TB)
  6. Yellow fever

Some countries require proof of vaccination (for example, for polio or yellow fever vaccination), which must be documented on an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) before you enter or when you leave a country.
